The five Douette friends

Our story

Five friends. One soft idea.

“We were done choosing between frumpy and trying too hard.”

I'm Elena. I turned fifty and realised I'd stopped buying clothes. It wasn't a decision. I'd walk into a shop, look at the racks, and walk back out with nothing. Half of it was made for my daughter. The other half looked like it had already given up on me.

I said this one night at Margaret's kitchen table, a bottle of wine in, expecting the others to tell me I was being dramatic. Instead all four of them nodded.

Claire has three work blazers she hates and wears anyway. Simone has lived in the same black jumper on every trip since her youngest left home. Margaret said she just buys whatever her grandkids won't laugh at. Rosa was quiet for a bit and then said she'd spent twenty years buying clothes to hide in.

So we made a deal. Each of us would find one piece that made us feel good, and everyone else had to try it on. Honest opinions only. It was brutal. A wrap dress didn't survive Claire. A beautiful coat didn't survive Rosa's arms. Simone's linen trousers didn't survive Margaret.

Then I brought a cardigan with five big gold buttons and a wavy hem, and it went round the whole table without a single complaint. Rosa wore hers home and slept in it. Claire wore hers to a Monday meeting and three people asked where it was from. Margaret ordered the red one for Christmas before we'd finished the bottle.

That's how Douette started. The name comes from doux, the French word for soft. Not soft as in invisible. Soft as in you finally feel comfortable, and you still look like you made an effort.

We're starting with this one cardigan in twelve colours, because we'd rather do one thing properly than fill a shop with things we wouldn't wear ourselves.
